Just a fun Launch Set!
- Easy to Assemble
- Flies up to 1,150 feet
- Launch system included
This launch set is superior to many others, in my opinion. I like that it came with the Electron Beam controller instead of the Astron. Many other sets come with the Astron controller. The Astron controller runs on a nine volt battery rather than AA batteries. I prefer AAs because they are more common and more reliable, in my experience. ESTES NOTE: The Astron 9V controller has been discontinued because it requires a very high quality alkaline battery for proper operation.
As regards the rocket, the classic Alpha III (the best rocket I had as a child). It is very simple to build. It also has proven very durable. It free fell approximately 275 feet on my first launch on an A8-3 engine and survived (it did not deploy properly because I did not pack the parachute perfectly the first time). However, don't expect a "perfect" rocket out of this set. The fin unit had one bent fin that causes the rocket to spin on accent. This is not unique to my specific Alpha III. I looked at some Alpha III kits later and they had the same problem. ESTES NOTE: The fins should not be bent with a new kit. If this is the case, contact our Customer Service Dept. please. The nose cone is hollow without a cap. Without care, the parachute can get stuck in there and not deploy. The two stick on decals that wrap around the rocket are too long for the body tube. This causes them to overlap by about an eighth or three-sixteenth of an inch. The instructions say to apply the decals after attaching the launch lug. This causes problems later when the bottom decal looks like it is supposed to be under it. ESTES NOTE: The decal does not go under the launch lug. The decal may need to be trimmed.
All in all, don't misunderstand. This is a superior set. I said it at the beginning for a reason. There are just some small details that keep it from being the perfect set.

The Alpha is THE Estes rocket. I've seen this one republished over and over. It's been featured in newsletters. Made from almost the very beginning of Estes production. The Alpha III is the next step. An E2X version of this true classic. If you're looking to get started with your first rocket, this is the set for you. Comes with everything you need to get started. Add motors and batteries and you can be flying within hours. I can't think of a better start for any novice rocketeer. I've owned this set for years and it's still in use. And will keep being flown as long as the rocket continues to survive.

My mom bought this kit for me from our local hobby shop for Christmas 1972. I remember begging my Dad to take me and my brothers to the local forest preserve just SE of O'hare airport. It as January and the wind was howling out of the SW. My dad warned me about the wind but I launched straight vertical and then ran after and watched as the wind took my ALPHA 3 away never to be seen by me again. Great Kit. I'm 56 years old and still have the original box the kit came in. I might just have to get me another one. Thanks mom and thanks ESTES.

The Alpha III was the first Estes rocket I bought for my son then in first grade to assemble with me and fly. It is a joy! It was priced well with the launch kit, purchased from our local hobby store. Structurally, it is strong, flies high, can take a hard landing, and be able to fly again. We flew this baby with C engines a couple of times, only to lose it in the sun and in a vast field. That field has been excavated since then and a few dozen townhomes are in its place. We now put our name, telephone and email on a label on our rocket bodies in case we lose them and a good Samaritan happens to find them. Estes should provide peel & stick ID labels in their kits.

after several years we still use the pad and controller. The rocket has been rebuilt several times but still gets flown, too. You won't be disappointed.

this kit was the first rocket I ever bought and built. I got the kit at toys-r-us in our town when I was 11. I remember agonizing over the fins not being perfectly aligned like the picture but they proved true flight after flight. This was when Cox still sold the .049 black widow and control line planes.
I had the rocket dart into the ground a few time where only the plastic fins were visible. dug it out, brushed it off and reloaded it for another flight. the rocket is solid and a very good first time flier.

A great first kit for starters. Very fun and a high flying rocket. me and my grandpa both started with this kit. Great rocket

This is a cheap rocket, but it flies very high! It went so high, I lost it on my first launch. It flies surprisingly well for an E2X rocket!
