This past May I became a Born-Again-Rocketeer after having spent 30 plus years away from the hobby. My first new project of choice was the Estes Lynx, because it is a small, 13mm engine-powered bird that looked to be a challenging build for an experienced model rocket builder and flier like myself.
I wasn't disappointed. The Lynx is a very attractive, well-designed model rocket that performs very well. I deviated somewhat from the original plans by replacing the rubber shock cord with a 36" length of sewing elastic. I also painted the bird dark blue overall with a lot of silver detail trim. I think it looks better than the all-black as shown in the literature.
As for flight: To date I have launched this bird twice - both times produced a perfect straight-up trajectory on an A10 engine! I hope to get many more similar flights with this beauty!
Recommendations for anyone wishing to build this bird: Go slow on construction and get all the parts aligned correctly.
Refrain from flying this rocket on anything but a calm day. All that fin area could cause some weathercocking in even a slight breeze. Use a parachute with a center spill-hole. 3/4" is plenty for a 12" chute. Works wonders for keeping the fins together on softer landings.
Overall, I am very pleased with this product. It not only flies well, but it looks great sitting on a display shelf.
Kudos to Mr. Boren on a great design!
Not sure if I'm allowed to do this here, but I've got posts on my model rocketry blog showing good pictures of this model during the build phase, and in flight:

Im not just intrested BIG power and BIG air with rocketry....like alot of other rocketry fanatics I am just as much into design and build. Within this context I must give mad propts to ESTES on the LYNX.....ITS BEAUTIFUL. The contour and shape of the wings and the way they wrap the air induction baffles is BEAUTIFUL. It might use mini engines but the design is breathtaking... The stock paint and finish doesn't do enough to show off the finer details in this build...I highly suggest it if you enjoy well thought out elbow deep BEAUTIFUL designs.

The CGI photos don't really do this kit justice, it's a very cool looking rocket once finished. The staggered 'wings', lots of vertical surfaces, and some jet intakes on the sides. What a goofy looking nose cone though.
Most of the build goes very easy, but those side intakes are quite tricky. I honestly wonder if it should have been a skill level 4 kit due to these. Nifty decals with all-white detail on a black painted design.
Should be a good small field flyer on the 13mm motors. Just watch the wind! With a 'chute, and all that wing area, it's going to weathercock and drift.
