A super FUN Launch Set!
- Helicopter Nosecone Recovery
- Cool Cat Decals
This was not my first scale model, but it was my first with large amounts of plastic construction. The tower was the hardest part for me. The work is pretty delicate and my plastic cement doesn't set very quickly, so it was a slow go. Once that construction was done, the rest was fairly simple. The wings take time. Finishing is also fairly complicated, as there's a good amount of precise painting required and a lot of decals to attach. It's definitely skill 3. Do yourself a favor and paint the capsule black before you attach the tower to it.
Flight is very satisfying. Takeoff is dramatic and a C motor will get you reasonable altitude. The rocket body is certainly big enough to accommodate a D/E engine mount, but I'm happy with the standard size. I put a lot of time into my model and I definitely want to get it back each time! I'm sure I'd end up losing it with E power.

Very challenging build for a beginner, yet fun to do... I enjoyed it tremendously!

This build was fairly straight forward. This is a great first kit for skill level 3. The parts were all good quality. The escape tower is built in the same way you would assembly a plastic model. It is a bit tricky, but nothing like some of the other "Redstone" kits that require you to build the escape tower piece by piece using tiny wooden dowels. The fins have a very scale appearance. Painting the black and white checker pattern on the fins was the hardest part for me. Use a good masking tape, and take your time. The Decals were all of good quality and make it look great, except the "United States" vertical decals seem to be a pinkish color instead of red. I'm not sure that the decals that go on the capsule are historically correct either, but they still look great once applied.
I have flown this rocket twice now on the recommended C6-3. Lift-off is fast enough to be safe, but slow enough to have a very scale looking flight. I didn't use an altimeter, but 200 feet seems to be about as high as it goes on the recommended engine. Ejection occurred at apogee on both flights, and to my amazement, the capsule was not damaged on either flight. Overall, I'm very pleased with this kit This rocket sits on my desk at work when I'm not flying it, and gets many compliments.

This model takes some time. But BEAUTIFUL in flight. Launches slow enough to enjoy the beauty of it.

Great rocket I bought two one for show one for go. Great looking on shelf and on the pad
In the build take time on the escape lattice and you may want to paint the top of the capsule before you install the lattice as it is hard to get at and paint black.

A very nice kit. I really like the challenging build, well worth the wait.

I am 12 years old and love to build build Estes rockets. I am so happy about this rocket.Saturn five??

What a classic! This rocket looks amazing once it's finished. Take your time building it and this rocket will be your pride and joy! I plan on purchasing another one in the near future simply as a static display. Thank you Estes for bringing this classic back!

This is one of my all-time favorites! The Mercury capsule and escape tower are highly detailed and the large decals give this a great look!
The only challenging part of this build is the fins, but it is worth it as they really can achieve a scale appearance.
